Capstans for safe berthing and mooring operations
1 December 2025
Capstans play a key role in safe and controlled berthing and mooring operations. At Straatman, we design and manufacture capstans that support reliable handling of mooring lines in ports and terminals worldwide.
Mooring capstans
A mooring capstan is a fixed installation used to guide mooring lines from the vessel to the quay. It supports controlled line handling during berthing and unberthing. Straatman supplies capstans as an integrated part of quick release mooring hook units. In addition, we offer free-standing vertical capstans. These can be combined with bollards or standard quick release hooks. Each capstan is designed to match the specific application. Vessel type, layout and operational requirements are always taken into account.
Safety and performance
Our mooring capstans are driven by electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic motors. This makes the berthing process safer and more efficient. The operating height can be adjusted to suit practical working conditions. Moreover, the robust construction ensures reliable performance in demanding environments. All capstans are CE approved and can be supplied with an IP68 rating when required. As a result, they remain operational even in flooded conditions.
Quality control and guarantee
We design, manufacture and test all mooring capstans in our own facilities. This allows us to maintain full control over quality and performance. In addition, we offer an extensive guarantee on our products. Maintenance contracts are available on request, ensuring long term reliability of your equipment.
