Three capstan projects
1 December 2025
From compact to round and full-scale. Straatman designs and manufactures customised capstans in-house, built to meet demanding industry standards. At the moment, we are working on three different capstan projects, each tailored to specific client requirements.
Solar-powered mini capstan
The most specialised project is our solar-powered mini capstan. Designed for remote locations without a power supply, this compact solution delivers reliable winching performance off-grid. The system powers a 1.5-kilowatt capstan with a hauling speed of approximately 15 metres per minute and a running pull of 500 kilograms. All components fit within a footprint of just 300 by 300 millimetres, leaving maximum working space on mono-pile platforms. For safe operation, the system includes integrated lighting. Thanks to its battery capacity, the capstan can operate for up to 25 days without sunlight.
Round capstan
Our round capstan represents the Straatman standard. It provides a robust base for an 11-kilowatt drive assembly, delivering a hauling speed of 30 metres per minute and a running pull of 2,000 kilograms. The operator can select clockwise or counterclockwise rotation via the control cabinet. For this project, the capstan is designed for use in a hazardous area, with all electrical equipment complying with IECEx Class 1 Division 2 requirements.
Square capstan
The square capstan is a custom solution developed for berth expansion projects. Each unit is equipped with a 5.5-kilowatt drive, offering a hauling speed of approximately 25 metres per minute and a running pull of 1,000 kilograms. These capstans feature two foot switches, one for each direction of rotation. They are suitable for hazardous areas and comply with ATEX Zone 1 standards.
